Ali’s Health Corner:  Topics that Affect Our Health & Wellness

A lot has been coming up in the news about depression and about suicide.  Though these are not topics people like to talk about, it’s important to acknowledge that it’s not uncommon for all of us to experience situational depression at some point during our lives—meaning that an event, like a divorce or death, triggers those deeply sad emotions.  Those with clinical depression face a more challenging obstacle because it’s not necessarily a situation that initiates or is responsible for their depression, and it can be very difficult to overcome.

This year in general has been a difficult year for many people.  Additionally, there is a lot in the world and in our society that is challenging.  Negative events strain our mind, body, and spirit, and sometimes it just feels like too much.  If that’s where you are, you’re not alone.  I have been there myself, and I want to share what I’ve learned in case it may help you or a loved one.

Anchor yourself that you may not be overcome by life’s storms.

Believe in something bigger than yourself.  Dr William Sears explains that “Science says spiritual people of all sorts are more likely to have happier brains, healthier bodies, and longer lifespans.*

I’m embarrassed to admit that I used to be a bit judgmental in my youth.  I grew up in a religion that trained me that ultimately everyone needed to believe what my religion taught, and then my own personal life storms came and taught me differently.  Those experiences showed me that spiritual truth is anything that helps a person become a better person—more kind, more loving, more charitable, more teachable, more authentic.  It doesn’t matter what religion good spiritual nuggets come from or whether they come from a religion at all as long as they help an individual become a better person.  So if something moves you to your highest self, embrace it!

You were meant to be.  Don’t give up!

There was a time in my life I almost gave up.  I’m glad I didn’t.  There have been utterly beautiful moments and miracles since then.  Trials and painful situations end.  They do.  Keep holding on.

Keep moving forward even if you don’t feel like it.

You may not know how things are going to work out when things aren’t going well, but they will if you keep moving forward.  Remember that “When you come to the edge of all the light you have known and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen:  either you’ll be given something to stand on or you will be taught how to fly.” (Unknown).

Fill your mind for the first 30 minutes each morning with positive things.

This creates that positive set point for the rest of your day.  You’ll feel better,  have more patience, and experience deeper inner peace.  Listen to inspirational videos or talks online.  Here’s an example of a 15 minute one:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He218LVmvw8

Don’t forget to laugh, especially at yourself.

Laughter is medicine for the body.  It releases endorphins, forms bonds, and increases brain connectivity. **  Watch funny movies or find a humorous friend to hang out with.

Keep flow in the body.

Flow is health.  Blockage is disease.  Massage is a powerful way to maintain this flow.  Massage is even known to significantly decrease stress and depression according to the Mayo Clinic.  Stress accounts for many illnesses.  “A 60-minute massage lowers cortisol—the stress hormone by an average of 30 percent…and increases serotonin [the happy hormone] by 28 percent.”  This combination boosts the body’s “ability to fight off pain, anxiety and feelings of sadness.”***  Check out the monthly massage special below if you, a family member, or friend could use some de-stressing.

Kitty’s Corner: CBD Topical Lotions & Massage

For the past couple of months, I’ve been wanting to add something additional to our massages at The Spa Central Coast to deliver even a more relaxing massage to ease stress and relieve pain.  I think I’ve found it.  A few weeks ago, we started carrying Sanare Smart CBD topical lotions.  We also have Vybes CBD Blueberry Mint and Peach Ginger drinks (that only have 4 g of sugar in a 14 oz bottle).  We will soon have CBD oil for dogs, too.

CBD is extracted from cannabis but is very different from marijuana because it does not lead to altered perception and cognition. Rather it tends to calm the nervous system.  In fact this June, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first pharmaceutical grade CBD, called Epidiolex, to treat severe seizure disorders in children.****

I’ve enjoyed my massages with this product and think you will as well.  We have a CBD Massage special this month if you want to try it (see the book button below), or you can also purchase your own lotion to take home (see purchase button below).

I’ll be happy to explain how to use it to anyone who buys this product.  Consultations are always free.

Much Love,
Kitty (Owner)

Health & Wellness Classes

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!!

Ali Bowen, MCHC will once again be co-teaching our class “Forgiveness and Self Love.” We’re breaking this class into 2 parts.  The first part will be on Tuesday, September 25 at 6:00pm in the Meditation room at The Spa Central Coast.  This class will help you have a better understanding of why self-love and forgiveness is the highest level of love and how everything in your life that is or isn’t working is connected to it and how forgiveness is crucial to our mental, physical and emotion health.  You’ll learn how to forgive yourself and those who have hurt you.

The second part will be on Tuesday, October 1 at 6:00pm.  We’ll be identifying how to listen to what your heart is trying to tell you and creating vision boards to help you identify what your soul needs, as well as desires that you may not be aware of but that are meant to be part of your life.

This class is $25 per person and includes both classes.  Once you sign up for the class on September 25th, we’ll sign you up automatically for the vision board class on Oct 1.

A BIG thanks to all of you who watched us on This is LA on July 7th and for your sweet feedback.  The episode was really fun to do.  If you didn’t see it but want to, we’ve included it below:

Ali’s Health Corner:  Topics that affect our Health & Wellness

About this time each year, clients begin to complain about digestive issues (e.g., heartburn, indigestion, & constipation).  It’s likely due to everything that accompanies that fun in the sun—an overindulgence in hotdogs, hamburgers, desserts, alcohol, and chips.

Why does overindulgence create havoc?  Ample research* shows that 70% of our health is in our gut, which is an enormous endocrine organ.  It absorbs essential nutrients and makes a number of hormones.  Thus, when something is out of balance there, it affects much of our body and mind.  When things are working well, it can provide us with health and good immunity.  Its rich supply of nerves has earned its name “gut brain,” and it’s also literally connected to the brain in our heads via the vagus nerve.  It’s not surprising then that our brain is most affected by nutrition.  The healthier your gut is, the healthier your brain is and the happier you will be because 90% of serotonin (the “feel good” hormone) is made in the gut.*

How can you keep your gut healthy?  Eat slow and small meals composed of  fresh fruits, veggies, and lean meats 90% of the time and consume daily probiotics (i.e., healthy bacteria/flora) to feed the good flora in your intestines.  You can get probiotics in fermented items like Greek yogurt, kefir, kombucha and cottage cheese (select low sugar options, though).

Since we have trillions of strains of gut bacteria, however, you’re likely not going to be able to get all you need through food.  Since supplements aren’t regulated and probiotics are affected by moisture, stomach acid and other factors, we’ve done a lot of research to select the specific one we carry at The Spa.  Always check with your doctor before going on any supplements, especially if you’re on any medication.

There are 8 particular probiotics that are especially powerful for your gut and skin.  Kitty’s corner will address more about how the skin on our face and probiotics are entwined.

I wish you all the best and optimal health!

Kitty’s Corner: Eczema, Acne, Rosacea, Pre-mature Aging

I’ve been searching for additional products to help my clients more quickly who have severe skin issues, and I’ve finally found them.  Are you or a loved one suffering from eczema, acne, rosacea or pre-mature aging?  I can help through a simple 3-step facial program that I’ve brought into The Spa recently.  There are thousands of bacteria on your face that keep our skin healthy, but when it’s out of balance, it creates issues like the ones I’ve mentioned. Ali talked about the importance of feeding your gut with probiotics, but it’s equally important to feed your face topically with them, too.  According to The American Academy of Dermatology, probiotics are the “new beauty breakthrough, optimizing skin’s natural barrier function as well as addressing acne and rosacea.”

I don’t ever put anything on my shelves unless I’ve personally used it.  I’ve used it every day for the past two months and have noticed huge benefits.   If you’d like the probiotics added to your facial treatment in The Spa, we can do that (see August Specials below to book) or you can purchase the set (see purchase button below).  We always love to see our clients, too, so feel free to stop by The Spa (617 12thSt, Paso Robles) to pick up a set.  I’ll be happy to explain how to use it to anyone who buys this regimen.  Consultations are always free.

Much Love,

Ali’s Health Corner:  Topics that affect our Health & Wellness

The 4th of July always reminds me of family.  We often spend it celebrating it with our immediate families, but it is also a time when we think about our larger family—the communities we’re part of and our entire American family as we contemplate our freedom and who are as a nation.

I learned the hard way how much power all these families have on us.  I grew up in a small town in a community I loved and attended a conservative religion where I actively participated.  In my childhood, I always felt different from my peers.  I overcompensated for the feeling of difference within me that I couldn’t accept by becoming a people pleaser.  When I came out at 29, most of my friends, my family, and my church community rejected me.  I didn’t know anyone else at the time who was gay.

To feel that much rejection at once was the most painful, loneliest moment of my life.  Its immediacy was as though I was pushed from a powerful force behind me into water only to later realize it was deeper than I could manage.  I saw faces staring down at me as I sank deeper.  Despite reaching my hands for them, those who could have easily saved me just stood still, staring while I struggled for my life.  Everything I thought I could trust in, all that I had built, all that I thought I knew existed no more.  It had disintegrated in a matter of days.  I sunk to the bottom of my life’s ocean for two years and stayed there in pain and anger—to such an intense degree I had never before felt.

But somehow in that brokenness, despite being told by others that God didn’t love me and that I no longer had any worth, I desperately clung to the feeling of love and joy I had felt during my years of developing a relationship with a power greater than myself.  I learned what it is to really forgive and how important it is to our own mental, physical, and emotional health.  However, it took 6 years before most of my family accepted me into their circle again.

Though I’d not wish this experience on anyone else, I made the choice to open my heart and learn what I could from this experience instead of closing it or giving up.  Doing so, taught me to wholeheartedly trust in a higher power, to ultimately figure out how to love myself and in doing so, to sincerely love my neighbor because I could finally genuinely love who I am.

When I heard in the news last week that an 8-year old African American boy hung himself after being bullied, I felt very impelled to share this message.  It is the lack of compassion toward each other that will be the only thing that has the power to destroy us as a nation.  Forgiveness and compassion aren’t just empty words, they are crucial for everyone’s health and wellness.

We need to come together as part of this great American family.  We all need each other, and we need the diversity that exists whether it’s political, ethnic, cultural, religious, or sexual orientation.  Difference makes us stronger not weaker—so many credible studies show it.

Why not use July 4th to start something new since our current way isn’t working?  Let’s try to listen to each other, respect each other, agree to disagree where we can’t find true common ground, and begin to create our circles of inclusion around, and focus on, healthy ways of building together what is important to us all:  our freedom, the safety of our kids & family, and an opportunity to earn a decent living for our time and skills we offer.

If you’re interested in attending a class on Forgiveness and Self Love this month, I’ll be co-teaching it with the newest member of our team, Janice Patterson who overcame a severe health crisis despite the prognosis given her.  See more information under “” below on how to sign up.  Also new this month is our new family menu.  You can come to The Spa with your entire family.  Your children and teens can now enjoy our healing spa treatments.

At The Spa Central Coast, all are welcome regardless.

Kitty’s Corner — What Your Skin Might Be Telling You

I’ve been seeing a lot of clients lately whose skin is suffering.  If you’ve come to me before, you’ve heard me speak about diet (i.e., what you’re eating).  You may not realize it but your diet severely affects your skin.  Most skin conditions are due to inflammation.  This is one of the reasons I’ve brought Ali, our Master Certified Health and Wellness coach into The Spa.  If you notice rough patches of skin, frizzy hair or nails that are brittle, you’re likely deficient in Omega-3 fats.  We need these healthy dietary fats to thrive, and fat itself is so important in skin health.  We have a layer on our skin that takes in dietary fats into its membranes. Water and gut health matter, too, for skin health.  We also have bacteria on the skin that need to be fed on the surface, too.  Ali, can help you with improving your diet.  I can help you with the surface part.  Together we can help you tackle your eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and other forms of dermatitis.

In fact, to treat the surface, I’ve just brought on a simple 3-step program for those who have challenging skin problems like acne.  I don’t ever put anything on my shelves unless I’ve personally used it.  I’ve used it every day for the past month and have noticed huge benefits.  I’m happy to say it is now available to you.  You can purchase it online from us through the MindBody app or come in to The Spa.  I’ll be happy to explain how to use it to anyone who buys this regimen.  Consultations are always free.

Much love,

Kitty (Owner)

What Sets Us Apart from Other Day Spas

(Each month we share one thing that makes us different from the rest)

We are one of the few day spas to offer a children’s menu because we realize the benefit of massage on kids.  Studies show it helps reduce ADHD**, increases cooperation, improves academic performance and reduces violence* in children and teens.

The Spa Central Coast News

Three years ago, my Dad passed away.  He was 80 years old.  He was a round character who lived a full life, and he was one of the most charming men I’ve ever known.  He taught me how to love unconditionally and to step into the shoes of other people.  There are so many things I miss about him, but most of all, I miss our heart-to-heart talks. He always seemed to know what I needed to hear to uplift me.  One of the greatest pieces of wisdom he ever gave me was “Don’t ever let anyone steal your light.”

Yesterday, I was thinking often about him and in the evening when I was eating dinner, Alexa (a device I just recently acquired) said out loud, ” Tell Ali that I love her” and those words also appeared on Alexa’s screen.  Whether or not it was just some weird technical glitch, I don’t know.  But to me, I felt it was my Dad sending me a reminder.

Give your Dad a reminder this Father’s Day…let him know you love him and cherish each day you may have with him.  Whether your relationship is good, so-so, or not so good, consider making his Father’s Day a happy one by bringing him in for our Father’s Day special (see in the Current Specials section below).  It just may bring a little more brightness in your life, too.

Namaste,
Ali (The Spa Director and Master Certified Health Coach)

Dr Geary Whiting (PhD) does human and horse massage.  He is also the owner of the Equine Massage School for Horses and Humans, and he is joining our team at The Spa Central Coast by providing Shiatsu massage to our clients. Shiatsu is based on similar principles as acupuncture, in which pressure is applied to particular points on the body.  All Shiatsu massages are done with the clothes on.  We recommend clients wear gym-type clothes when they come in for this type of massage.  This massage is particularly amazing for anyone who has had injuries in the past or has any stuck energy from trauma (physical or emotional) in their body that is causing pain.  75 minutes is only $155.

Geary’s bio:   He is International teacher.  He has a fitness background going back to 1963.  Since 1981, part of his career included being a personal trainer and body worker to World Class Athletes. Geary is also the owner, founder, and teacher of his unique Equine Massage School for Horse and Human established in 1998. Health & Wellness Classes

A big thanks to those who attended our health class on stress in May.  It was wonderful to see you there!  Ali will be teaching another class on Thursday, June 28 at 6pm in The Spa Central Coast meditation room.  The class is “Good Fats vs. Bad Fats:  Why Your Life May Depend on Knowing the Difference.”

It’s all about the fats!!  Your health is affected by the fats you eat, and certain types of fats, in particular, can contribute to your body hanging on to extra weight.  Come find out whether or not you’re making the right choices because it’s not always easy to figure it out due to manufacturer’s marketing ploys.  For instance, do you know if lowfat foods are good for you and why or why not?  Do you know what oils to cook with and at what temperatures so they don’t turn carcinogenic?   Are you aware of the oils and types of fats necessary for brain health and which ones can help lower cholesterol and heart disease?  You’ll learn the answer to these questions and how to naturally reduce high blood pressure and lower cholesterol.  There are only 6 spots available, so please book early.  The class is only $45.

Did you read the recent study that shows processed foods increase the risk of cancer?   A team in France and Brazil conducted a study that suggests not only are processed foods bad for you, but they have an extra risk of cancer.  What kinds of processed foods?  Instant noodles, packaged breads and baked goods, frozen or shelf-ready meals, sweet and savory packaged snacks, sweetened drinks and sodas, meatballs, chicken and fish nuggets…to name a few.****

Try taking a 30-day challenge to purify your body.  Avoid refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, canned, processed and fast food for 30 days and replace those things with fresh fruit and vegetables (organic when possible), fish, olive oil, and less meat than you normally consume.  Write in a journal each day, noting any changes you feel in your body, mind, or spirit.  We’d love to hear your results.  Please email any to Ali at alithespacc@gmail.com.  See the references for this article below.

It’s the Month of Mom!

Kitty and I have been talking about our moms and laughing about the silly times with them and the most valuable lessons they’ve taught us.

Kitty learned from her mom how to work hard and to have fun.  My mom taught me how to laugh at myself and how to stay healthy.  The influence of our moms no doubt helped Kitty to become a business owner and inspired me to ultimately dive into my passion of helping people become healthier.

What valuable lesson has your birth mom or someone you’ve adopted as “your mom” taught you?

Now it’s your turn to give back to her…teach her the valuable lesson of vital self care by taking time to relax during your facials together in our lovely room for two at The Spa.  Choose from a 60-minute Love You, Mom! Facial together for only $250 for both of you or a 30-minute Love You, Mom! Facial for only $170 for both of you.  If you don’t wish to have a facial with your mom, pamper her with a Love You, Mom! Gift Card and let her choose what treatment she’d like for Mother’s Day.

Did you know that overall healthy adults who received hugs were found less likely to come down with a common cold according to a study from Carnegie Mellon University?*  Hugs also reduce depression, promote trust from the surge of oxytocin, lower stress, increase self-esteem, and smooth out a disagreement.  Since hugging has measurable neurological-biological benefits and costs nothing, start doling out more hugs!**  It’s beneficial to you and to the receiver. If you want to change the world, and most of all your own, it all starts with you.

The Spa Central Coast News

Kitty (owner) and I (Ali), Director and Master Health and Wellness Coach of The Spa Central Coast, spent the last couple weeks of March exploring new spa treatments and philosophies in Bali, Indonesia.  Bali is known as the Island of a Thousand Temples because whenever a house or building is constructed, a temple must also be built. Every day, time is dedicated to rituals regarding the temple, rituals that calm the mind, center the heart, and prepare the person for the day.  They even have an annual Peace Day in March where the entire island closes down—no one goes out; no lights are used.  Even the airport shuts down operations.

This gorgeously lush island is only matched in loveliness by the beauty of its people who live by a philosophy they sincerely uphold called Ahimsa, which means “do no harm.”  They truly help their fellow Balinese and treat strangers as friends.  If there were an equivalent American concept it would be the Golden Rule—treat others as you want to be treated.  We couldn’t help but wonder, though, why we don’t have the same high level of peace with one another in America as the Balinese are able to reach with their fellow citizens—despite their crazy traffic and busy-ness of their shops in the cities.  Isn’t peace what we all truly and secretly (or openly) crave?  Peace in our communities; peace in our lives; peace within ourselves?

The answer to the Balinese’s national ability to create peace finally occurred to us after observing them for eleven days …they have sincerely internalized the temple within themselves.  They are able to live with reverence outwardly because they have become reverent inwardly.  They have peace, love, and respect for their own person first while a majority of Americans don’t—as reflected in the ways we treat ourselves…our high rates of youth and adult drug abuse, our high levels of eating disorders, our higher than average suicide rates, our high rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. We’ve become so good at abusing and being violent with ourselves, it’s no wonder that seeps out into our relationships with others around us.

Kitty and I realized if we want peace—true lasting peace—it has to begin with working on our own inner self first.  All those at The Spa Central Coast want peace so much for ourselves, for our family, for our friends, for our clients, that we’ve decided to transform The Spa over the next 12 months to incorporate this idea of treating the body as temple into our treatments and health classes at The Spa.  We’ll all be learning how to do this ourselves and will include each month in our newsletter’s “Health Corner” something you can learn or try in order to implement this new way of living.  Additionally, our specials will tie in to this concept as well if you want to come to The Spa for a treatment.

We’re really excited about this new journey and hope you’ll begin it with us.  And who knows…by starting with ourselves, we all may be able to be a good influence on those around us…for as you “change yourself, you change the world.”

Namaste,
Ali & Kitty

Community News

Do you agree with what the State has done?  The State of California enacted additional regulation of massage therapists by requiring them to get CAMTC Certification, which is a 500 hour certification program.   Before this regulation, massage therapists would attend massage school, usually in 200 hour certification programs and then they would do continuing education classes each year.

The new regulation has been problematic, however, for two reasons.

Practicing massage therapists who’ve been working in the industry for 10+ years have already many more than 500 hours of massage experience; however, in order for them to legitimately practice their trade now, they must return to school and pay $8,000-$16,000 just to get a certificate stating what they already have achieved.  Many experienced therapists are now having to leave the profession altogether because they can’t afford to go back to school or to only work in cities that haven’t yet implemented the regulation—which are becoming less and less.  Unfortunately, many of these therapists are also women* and often times single mothers.  Thus, it’s effectively putting people out of work.

The new regulation is also problematic for legitimate spas like The Spa Central Coast in being able to hire enough massage therapists who hold this new CAMTC Certification.  For any City, like Paso Robles, that has chosen to implement it, spas have no choice but to hire individuals from the state-approved massage schools with the CAMTC Certification. And yet, there is only one massage school in the San Luis Obispo County.  Even though it is a good school, due to their limited capacity, they graduate less than 20 people per year.  This is not enough for the demand among spas that are needed in our County alone. Additionally, this new regulation translates in to forcing spas to hire therapists who are recently graduated and often less experienced than therapists who have been working 10+ years but who don’t carry the new CAMTC Certification title.  Most people, especially our clients, want experienced therapists working on them because it tends to be a much better overall massage when someone knows what s/he is doing.

If you, too, believe the State has overstepped its bounds on this issue, and would like to join us in signing the petition in the link below, we’d sincerely appreciate your support.

Health Corner –The Third Eye

What is the “third eye?”  The “third eye”—as referred to by shamans, ancient Greeks, those in energy healing, and some religions—is depicted as being centered between a person’s two eyebrows.  It’s a representation where the pineal gland actual sits in the middle of the brain.  It is believed to encapsulate a higher consciousness and a window into a higher energy field that we can’t touch, see, physically feel, smell, or hear.  It is considered a sort of “sixth sense” that transcends our five basic senses and helps us to know things before there is any “rational” way to actually know them. Some call it intuition.  Rene Descartes, an ancient philosopher, referred to it as the “Seat of the Soul.” To the mainstream, the “third eye,” was once thought of as just a strange concept.  But evidence in modern science shows this is not as odd as people in the mainstream thought.

Scientific research has shown there are significant similarities between the biology of the retina and the pineal gland. The pineal gland also houses the greatest level of serotonin.  Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and governs mood, sleep, and energy.  It’s popularly known as the neurotransmitter of confidence and happiness.  More evidence is showing that diet may affect the activity of the pineal gland.  Diets high in sugar, artificial colors, preservatives and low in nutrients have detrimental effects on the healthy operation of the pineal gland, while consuming fresh foods and quality, organic products help to allow it to optimally function.

Do you want more clarity and energy?  Try purifying your pineal gland by taking a 30-day challenge.  Avoid refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, canned, processed and fast food for 30 days.  Replace these things with fresh fruit and vegetables (organic when possible), fish, olive oil, and less meat than you normally consume.  Write in a journal each day, noting any changes you feel in your body, mind, or spirit.  We’d love to hear your results.  Please email any to Ali at alithespacc@gmail.com.  (See the references for this article below).

Group Health & Wellness Classes

Please don’t forget that Ali will be offering group health and wellness classes beginning May 2018.  Topics for classes will include “Belly Fat and How & Why to Get Rid of it,” “How to Keep Your Brain Young,” “Real Foods—How to Find Them,” “Good Fats vs. Bad Fats:  Why Your Life May Depend on Knowing the Difference,” “How to Speed Up Your Metabolism,” “Your Body Has Its Own Medicinal Pharmacy:  How to Unlock It,” “How to Keep Your Body and Mind Young,” and “You’re More Powerful Than You Think:  Stop Giving Your Power Away.”  Spaces are limited, though.  If you are interested in attending a class, please let her know by sending an email to alithespacc@gmail.com.  Each class will be $45 per person.  If you’re more interested in one-on-one coaching, please contact Ali to let her know, and we can do a free consultation to determine the best path for you.  Pricing will be determined based on length of time and level of coaching needed.

Purify Your Body Temple Special

Purifying the body means to remove contaminants from it.  Sometimes purification is done through specific breathing that helps detoxify the body, ritual baths, or treatments designed to pull toxins from the body.  Purification was particularly important in ancient times to empower the senses in order to gain clarity about one’s life and purpose.  It helps to get rid of what is worn out and prepares the body and mind to receive new understanding.

Come purify your body today by enjoying 60 min The Signature  Seaweed Body Wrap OR the 60 min Sedona Mud Wrap (if you’re sensitive to iodine) for only $89. With this special, you receive a soothing foot soak in our peaceful meditation room to initiate the relaxation process.  Your therapist will then lead you into one of our beautiful treatment rooms to enjoy your body wrap.

Body Wraps can improve circulation and eliminate toxins from the body, temporarily re-shape the body, help reduce body fat deposits as well as nourish the body with every vitamin, mineral and trace element your body needs.

The Signature body wrap recipe is made with various types of potent ocean algae. Included are many types of precious essential oils that work synergistically with the algae that is rich in minerals, helps with dry or dehydrated skin or skin that has begun to lose its tone. The essential oils are blended to work on specific parts of the body. This treatment will begin the process of releasing toxins that cause the skin to appear rippled or thick looking such as thick upper arms, pouches on upper hips, waists and stomachs that are bloated or are distended.  It is an extraordinarily powerful treatment.

The Spa Central Coast News

If you have visited The Spa Central Coast in the past 6 months, many of you have met Ali, our Spa Director and Master Health and Wellness Coach.  She will be offering health and wellness classes beginning May 2018.  Topics for classes will include Real Foods—How to Find Them, Good Fats vs. Bad Fats:  Why Your Life May Depend on Knowing the Difference, How to Speed Up Your Metabolism, Your Body Has Its Own Medicinal Pharmacy:  How to Unlock It, How to Keep Your Body and Mind Young, and You’re More Powerful Than You Think:  Stop Giving Your Power Away.  Spaces are limited, though.  If you are interested in attending a class, please let her know by sending an email to alithespacc@gmail.com.

New Hours

We are making health and wellness a larger part of The Spa Central Coast, and part of being healthy is getting rest and relaxation.  Starting March 2018, we will be closing on Sundays (except for parties of 4 or more and holidays) in order to give our team a day of rest and time to spend with their families.  Thank you for your continued loyalty.  We hope that you will support us on this new path and book your appointments Monday-Saturday from 9:00am-6:00pm.

Community News

As you know, parts of the Central Coast endured devastating fires followed by wrenching mudslides in December and January.  Many in the communities we know and love were affected.  Generous first responders, communities, neighbors, friends, and families have worked diligently to clean up the destruction left behind by these horrific events.  The Spa Central Coast’s delightful client, Suellen Spong, and her husband have been in Santa Barbara recently as part of that clean up crew and shared with us that this area is ready again to have visitors.

Additionally, our sister spa, The Day Spa of Ojai was negatively affected from these fires and the aftermath, as were so many located in downtown Ojai and the surrounding area.  Montecito and Carpinteria were also heavily impacted. Please bring some happiness to those in these areas by visiting and supporting the businesses there.

Health Corner

Did You Know?

Did you know that massage and alcohol do not mix?  If you are going to a spa that serves alcohol, you may want to ask yourself, “Is this good for me?”  The reasons spas serve alcohol may not be to benefit you but to benefit them.

Kitty Arosteguy, owner of The Spa Central Coast, loves nothing more than pairing a good wine with a fabulous meal and would be the first to recommend some of our wonderful local wineries to clients after they have had a massage, but she would never mix alcohol with massage.

Here’s why…massage encourages circulation and pushes the lymph fluid and relieves fluids more quickly in the body. Hence, this process is a bit dehydrating. This is part of the reason why you should drink plenty of water after a massage.  Alcohol is a diuretic, and its dehydrating effects can be intense (think hangover headache).  It dilates the blood vessels and moves alcohol more quickly through the bloodstream. Having two processes going on simultaneously that are dehydrating is not good for the body.  Massage can also intensify alcohol content and hangover symptoms because during a massage, the alcohol goes to the bloodstream faster and can stay there longer…like an amplification effect.  Moreover, massage makes the body’s immune system stronger.  Whereas, too much alcohol actually weakens the immune system.  You diminish the health benefit of massage by combining them.  This is why many massage experts recommend waiting approximately four hours after consuming alcohol before you get a massage. ***

March 2018 Specials

March Madness Gladness!!

Dr William Fry, a Stanford University Psychiatrist shares that kids laugh more than 400 times a day, while adults only laugh only about 12 times a day.*

Where has our laughter gone?  It is time to recapture it, which is why we, at The Spa Central Coast, have decided to make it a Month of Gladness rather than Madness!

Join us for some specials that will uplift and create rejuvenation in your mind, body, and soul.  You may want to try a body wrap, for instance.  They are so healthy and make you feel so happy that truly everyone should have one monthly, which is why we are giving such a superb price on them during March Gladness.  We want everyone to experience the amazing benefit of them.  If you want to try another treatment to increase your happiness factor, come in for a “Friends Forever” Massage with your bestie.  If the specials do not appeal to you, check out our other massages and treatments here at The Spa Central Coast.  After all, massages increase the feel good hormones like serotonin and dopamine—both sure fire ways to get your happy activated.

Friends Forever Massage Special

What do you think of when someone mentions the name of your best friend?  Happiness?  Laughter?  Gratitude?  There is very little that is more fulfilling than a really great friendship.  Being understood by someone is close to nirvana.  It just feels so good!!  We know our friendships are important.  Now studies show why.  Having secure friendships promote a healthy brain and are vital to our mental health.  Friends assist us in more easily rebounding from illness and disease, help us to make better choices in our lives, and ease the stresses we experience, and best of all….they make us feel happier!**

Show your bestie how much you value her or his friendship by experiencing a “Forever Friends” massage together during the entire month of March Gladness.  This special includes a soothing foot soak in our peaceful meditation room where you can sit side-by-side with your friend while sipping water or a special tea.  You’ll then enter together into a lovely massage room to continue your “friend” time together.  Each of you will have your individual and attentive massage therapist delivering your 60-Minute Swedish massage while sharing a special friend ritual that will remind you of the special times you have shared over your life—whether or not that comprises just a few months or years.  You will receive a small gift at checkout to commemorate your special “bestie” day together.  All for only $210.

Sedona Mud Wrap Special

Body Wraps can improve circulation and eliminate toxins from the body, temporarily re-shape the body, help reduce body fat deposits as well as nourish the body with vitamins, minerals and trace elements your body needs.

This treatment is completely customized to meet the specific needs of your body. With this special, you receive a soothing foot soak in our peaceful meditation room to initiate the relaxation process.  Your therapist will then lead you into one of our beautiful treatment rooms to enjoy a 60-Minute Sedona Mud Wrap which is made with potent ocean red algae combined with precious essential oils that work synergistically with the algae. As you are wrapped in the most loving algae cocoon (just like a beautiful butterfly), the algae—rich in minerals—begins working to help your dry or dehydrated skin…skin that has begun to lose its tone.  This then releases toxins that cause the skin to appear rippled or thick looking such as thick upper arms, pouches on upper hips, waists and stomachs that bloat or are distended.  This extraordinarily powerful treatment is one where you will definitely walk away feeling uplifted and happy!  This special is available all month of March Gladness for only $80.

What Sets Us Apart from Other Day Spas

(Each month we share one thing that makes us different from the rest)

We are one of the only spas that give a 60-minute massage.  Many spas only offer 50-minute massages and charge you more for it than we do for our 60-minute massage.  Massages at The Spa Central Coast are a great value for your money.
