A New Meaning for Masks

Kitty’s Corner: Thoughts, Opinions, & Musings of Kitty’s

A New Meaning for Masks

Regardless of what face mask you use, it is not healthy for the skin to be covered for prolonged periods of time. The skin suffers from rashes, irritations, ingrown hairs, chapping and breakouts. We have seen photos of nurses and doctors on the front line of the pandemic with irritation, hives and even bruises on their skin from masks.

What’s the biggest issue? By keeping your face covered, it creates a hot and humid environment; your breathing creates a lot of trapped moisture. This leads to build up of sweat and sebum on the skin and trapped impurities on the facial mask. This can leave you with inflammation, rashes, and breakouts. I have personally had to treat my skin differently– even at my age of 57—during this Pandemic because of the masks.  Maybe I should say I’m 56?  I think we all should subtract a year from our age since this year really shouldn’t count for any of us. 56 it is!

Below I have made a recommendation for your skin if you are experiencing issues.

Blessings,

New Steps for Our Booking Process

The holiday season is among us, and while we could all use some holiday cheer, we must remain vigilant and cautious with the effects of Covid-19 still prominent in our daily lives. With that being said, we have updated our intake form and have changed some protocols in the spa.

We will no longer be giving foot soaks before treatments. While they are an amazing way to get our clients grounded and ready for treatments, we feel that as long as SLO county remains in the purple tier we should not offer them. We have also added new questions to our intake form.

To best protect your health and the health of others, all clients must fill out this form before each massage and bodywork session. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call (805) 591-7157. Thank you for understanding. We look forward to seeing you!

Looking forward to our open house and individual demo treatments of TempSure Envi – the latest in Laser RF for the treatment to correct sagging skin, cellulite, wrinkles and enhance elasticity. I love being able to offer effective non-invasive solutions for health and skin care that are safe and don’t require down time! Please see the Spa website for more details on our event.

What is TempSure Envi?
TempSure Envi is a new radiofrequency treatment that minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, tightens skin* and improves the appearance of cellulite.

  • Safe for all skin types and levels of sun exposure
  • No surgery, no needles, no downtime

The Problem
As we age, our bodies can’t generate collagen as fast as it is depleted causing our skin to lose laxity and firmness. As a result, wrinkles and fine lines form leaving you with smile lines, crow’s feet and other bothersome creases.

Paso Robles TempSure Envi Spa Treatments
Beautiful Skin. Beautifully Simple.
The Solution
Finally there’s a solution that works! TempSure Envi minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, tightens skin* and improves the appearance of cellulite. It’s safe for all skin types so it fits into any beauty maintenance routine, any time of year!

December
During this season of joy and comfort foods let’s not forget our microbiomes and the benefits it can have on our skin! When it comes to overall skin health, probiotics (topical and oral) are your secret weapon!

PROBIOTICS

  • Combat the negative effects of harmful bacteria
  • Support barrier function (think leaky gut – but on your skin)
  • Support the regulation of your immune system and reduce inflammation
  • Help keep your gut brain skin axis in balance

I love to integrate the use of probiotics along with Botox treatments to achieve beautiful results in your skin. Radiance from the inside out is a great look for the Holidays!

Neck and Shoulder Pain

Roughly 18-26 percent of adults suffer from neck and shoulder pain. Stress is one of the biggest key factors in the cause of a tight neck and shoulder muscle, as well as posture and sleep. Taking time before your day starts, maybe first thing in the morning, to stretch and end with a simple meditation. Allow yourself to take a minute in the day to stop and take a few deep breaths, getting oxygen in to the blood. Stretching and massage will also give relief to tight muscles. The services we provide here at The Spa Central Coast can help you with finding that relief. Our therapists are trained to provide the best therapy possible to help our clients.
Recommended treatments for this type of muscle pain would be:

  • Deep Tissue Massage: this massage gives the deepest body work, allowing for the muscles to be worked and stretched.
  • Back Refresher: this treatment uses our anti inflammation gel coupled with our deep heat oil and the use of hot towels to help relieve inflammation and soothe those tightened neck and shoulder muscles.
  • Anti Stress Massage: this massage is exactly what it says, anti stress. We use an essential oil blend to help calm the mind and soothe the body, relieving some of that tension and stress we tend to carry daily.

Here are a couple of stretches to do in the morning or on a break at work.

Neck Release:

  1. Square the shoulders.
  2. Lower the chin to the chest. You should feel the stretch through the neck and down the spine.
  3. Hold this position for 1 minute.
  4. Gently tilt your head to the left to stretch your right shoulder.
  5. Hold for 1 minute.
  6. Repeat on the opposite side.
  7. Do this to each side 3-5 times.

Across the Chest Stretch:

  1. Bring your right arm across your chest.
  2. Place it in the crease of your left elbow or use your left hand to support your arm.
  3. Hold this position for 1 minute.
  4. Repeat on the opposite side.
  5. Do this stretch 3-5 times.

Kitty’s Corner: Thoughts, Opinions, & Musings of Kitty’s

I apologize that I’ve not done a newsletter for a bit.  In the last couple of months, there have been so many changes required by the State that it’s been difficult to keep up, and my Dad unfortunately passed away during that time as well.  Always know, however, that any updated information appears on our website.

I’ve had clients recently come in who’ve mentioned they need to be touched.  Touch is always essential, and yet it is one of the primary things that we’ve been made to feel we can’t do during this pandemic.  We need to balance Covid-19 requirements though with common sense and science, meaning that we can’t give up what common sense and what science show keeps us healthy in order to avoid becoming unhealthy.

Dacher Keltner, Director of Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley University states that “a wave of studies has documented some incredible emotional and physical health benefits that come from touch. […T]ouch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health. […]. The science of touch convincingly suggests that we’re wired to—we need to—connect with other people on a basic physical level. To deny that is to deprive ourselves of some of life’s greatest joys and deepest comforts.”  He states that touch is our “primary language of compassion, and a primary means for spreading compassion.”

So if the world feels a bit hard right now, go touch someone you love and spread compassion.  You can still stay within health guidelines by washing your hands afterward.

If you’d like to read the entire article, you can find it at
https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/hands_on_research

I’d like to also encourage you to reach out to our Wellness Center partners for your self-care needs.

Our local partners include:
Ali Health and Wellness (626-616-0945) for Biofield tuning and energy work and Dharma Yoga Loft (805-434-1934) for yoga classes and retreats.  Both offer safe environments during this time as well.

May we all stay healthy and well.

Dr. Stefanie Mikulics

Dr. Mikulics’ Corner

I have been in private practice for nearly 20 years and have been blessed with the opportunity to offer wellness exams, gyn care and cosmedic medicine treatments.  I am very excited to offer the best of rejuvenating treatments at The Spa while supporting you in your health, beauty and wellness from the inside out.

One of the cosmedic treatments I offer is the Tempsure Envi.  It’s a noninvasive radiofrequency treatment that can minimize fine lines and wrinkles, tighten skin, and improve the appearance of cellulite. The device uses radio frequency waves to deliver heat deep into your skin, triggering collagen production that results in more firmness and fewer wrinkles. It’s safe for all skin tones, and there’s no down time.

It works best as a series of treatments. Every patient will have a personalized schedule, but you can expect to need at least four Tempsure Envi sessions, two to four weeks apart. Treatments can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the area.

During your treatment, you’ll feel warmth but no pain as I direct the handpiece over your skin. Similar devices have existed for years, but Tempsure Envi is the only device of its kind to emit radiofrequency that stimulates the nerves so minimally, allowing providers to use a higher temperature and faster results without pain.

Health, Happiness and Many Blessings,

Stefanie Mikulics, MD

Along Comes Hope

Along Comes Hope Success Story

Rochel was a Senior at Paso Robles High School when she was diagnosed with leukemia at 17 years old. Her aunt and uncle moved her here from the Philippines without her parents to work at their elder care home five months before her diagnosis.  She was referred to Along Comes Hope through her physician, as she was not getting support, healthy foods or consistent rides to her lifesaving treatments and doctor appointments. Rochel would not have survived without having these intense chemotherapy treatments and many appointments.

The team at Along Comes Hope jumped into action and became a part of Rochel’s healing journey. They helped her with transportation support from Paso Robles to Stanford Hospital chemotherapy, as well as her local doctors in San Luis Obispo.  They also helped her with some healthy food and emotional support. She had never worn a dress or gone to a dance, but wanted so badly to go to her Senior year high school prom.  Along Comes Hope made that happen.  Their team found a gown for her, a beautiful wig donated from Hearst Cancer Resource Center, and bought her prom tickets. Their CEO went to Rochel’s home to do her makeup and hair.

When Rochel looked in the mirror, she said, “I feel like a Princess!” One of their amazing male Cal Poly volunteers showed up with flowers to escort her to the prom for a wonderful night of memories, dancing and laughter.

The photo below displays the gifts of life that Rochel was blessed with after healing from cancer.  She was told she would likely never be able to have a baby due to the intense and aggressive chemotherapy she’d endured. But this Princess found her Prince and is now married with two beautiful children. If Rochel wasn’t given a chance to fight cancer, so many lives would have been impacted.  No family should have to choose between affordability or survivability. Along Comes Hope is here to help make sure every child gets a chance to fight this disease.

Minted Spinach Soup

Minted Spinach Soup

MAIN INGREDIENTS*

3 carrots
13.4 oz chickpeas
2 tsp ras el hanout spice
1 onion
1 oz fresh ginger
½ oz fresh mint
8 oz baby spinach
2 tsp vegetable broth concentrate
¼ cup Forager® Project Cashewgurt®
1 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbsp + 1 tsp olive oil
Salt and pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Roast the vegetables
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Peel and dice the carrots. Drain and rinse the chickpeas and pat dry with a kitchen towel. Add the diced carrots and just half the chickpeas to a baking sheet and toss with 1 tbsp vegetable oil, ras el hanout, and a pinch of salt. Roast until the carrots are tender and the chickpeas are crispy, 15 to 18 minutes.

2. Prepare the aromatics
Peel and dice the onion. Peel and mince 1 tbsp of ginger. Pick the mint leaves.

3. Start the minted spinach soup
Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion, minced ginger, and a pinch of salt. Cook until the onions have softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the remaining chickpeas, spinach, vegetable broth concentrate, all but a few of the mint leaves, 1¼ cups water, and 1 tsp salt. Bring the soup to a boil, reduce heat to low, and cook until the greens have wilted, 4 to 5 minutes.

4. Blend the minted spinach soup
Carefully transfer the minted spinach soup to a blender. Blend until smooth. Taste, and add salt and pepper as necessary.

5. Serve
Divide the minted spinach soup between bowls. Dollop with Cashewgurt. Top with the ras el hanout, carrots and crispy chickpeas, and the remaining mint leaves. Enjoy!

KITTY’S CORNER

As I have had more than 70 days to take a look at my business and its new path going forward, I saw a need for more changes for the future.  So I am calling our next phase Wellness Revolution 2020, and The Spa is transitioning from being just a “Spa’ to becoming a Wellness Center and Spa.

Scientific studies reveal that massage is needed to relieve stress, chronic pain, and stabilize mental health. During the sheltering-at-home, a mental health crisis occurred, individuals’s self care declined, and reports of overall wellbeing decreased.  This is partly why I felt the need to introduce changes and see our special place become more of a Wellness Center than just a “spa.”   Some of the changes we’ve already made is having a medical doctor, Dr Stefanie Mikulics, who I have partnered with, remodeling every room in The Spa to give it a fresh look, bringing on healthy, organic vegan and vegetarian “Grab and Go” food from Bliss Cafe in San Luis Obispo, and working in collaboration with other wellness professionals, like Jena Baird, owner of Dharma Yoga Loft, and Ali Bowen, owner of Ali Health and Wellness, who will also be an extension of this Wellness Center.  (More to come on this and the discounted services and Wellness Card that will be available in the near future).  Additionally, Far-Infrared Sauna and spray tanning are also available, as well as a 10-minute meditation at 1:00pm Tuesday-Saturday.

Dr Mikulics is here to help you in your need to relieve stress, address hormone issues, gut health, medical aesthetic treatments, and the Mona Lisa procedure. Right now, the Governor is only allowing massage with a prescription from a doctor. This is available to you now at our Wellness Center and Spa.  If you feel the  need for a massage, please call us for a screening.  We will have Dr Mikulics evaluate if a massage is likely to help relieve any symptoms you are having.  We hope to be able to offer massage for others without a medical need soon.

Currently, we are open 10:00am-6:00pm Tuesday-Friday and 9:00am-6:00pm Saturday for your “Grab and Go” Vegan and Vegetarian food, Far-Infrared Sauna and spray tanning.  Prescription-based massages are booked after meeting medical criteria.

We look forward to increasing everyone’s health and wellness.

Blessings,
Kitty

Dr Mikulics’s Corner

We all know that stress can affect your skin. An acne flare after a major upset in your life is not a coincidence. But is it true that when it comes to beautiful glowing skin bacteria is your friend, and your gut is calling the majority of the shots?  YES!

The Gut, Brain, Skin Axis is the new era of optimal skin care. Let’s break it down. When you have stress perceived or actual, your body starts to produce more cortisol (a key hormone secreted by the adrenal glands). Cortisol, being a natural steroid, hampers your immune response, lowering your ability to make important antibodies that act as little soldiers along the skin and gut lining. There are many mechanisms at play but without their protection, the result is increased levels of pathogens sneaking in and increasing inflammation. Excessive inflammation has numerous harmful effects on the body. In the skin, it can lead to decreased collagen and elastin production resulting in sagging, dehydrated loose skin. Acne, rosacea, and psoriasis can flare as well. It gets worse; all of this inflammation is also a destroyer of a healthy microbiome (the good bugs that live in and on our bodies).

When the microbiome of our gut is compromised, we are at higher risk for Intestinal Permeability or Leaky Gut Syndrome. This leads to – you guessed it- more inflammation. Often a vicious cycle ensues because our good gut bugs are responsible for making up to 90% of our serotonin (happy brain hormones)  and other important neurotransmitters. As a result, our anxiety and stress can worsen, and the cycle of skin problems persists.

We also have a microbiome specific to our skin. It has many important jobs including, protecting against infections by crowding out the bad bacteria, creating an acidic environment (pH ~5) which inhibits the growth of pathogens, and they help keep the skin’s immune system cells in balance.

We now know that in order to achieve healthy skin, all of these factors (also referred to as NICE – Nuero-immuno-cutaneous-endocrine) must be addressed. The right regimen customized to best support your overall Gut Brain Skin Axis can have you looking AND feeling great in no time!

Beauty From Within,

Stefanie Mikulics, MD

ALI’S CORNER

Ali Health and Wellness is delighted to be working in collaboration with the Wellness Center and Spa to help provide services, as well as being a part of creating a new paradigm in the way we all look at, and maintain, our health in the future. In 1994, the National Institute of Health measured our energy and said we are all electromagnetic energy…so we’re a vibration, a frequency.  In energy medicine, it’s long been known that fear has a low vibration, while joy, love, and peace have high vibrations.

According to The Guardian, human hearing begins at 20hz.  However, 19hz is a range considered low frequency and below human hearing.  This low region can “affect humans and animals in several ways, causing discomfort, dizziness, blurred vision (by vibrating your eyeballs), hyperventilation and fear, possibly leading to panic attacks.”  **

Interestingly, the roar of a tiger contains frequencies of 18hz, which can disorientate and paralyze its victim.  It’s now being hypothesized that 18hz may be the same frequency as fear.  When you allow yourself to feel fear, you are negatively affecting your body and mind.  Is it any wonder then why you feel unable to think or “paralyzed” in your actions when you’re really afraid?  But you can raise your vibration by doing self-care items, like biofield tuning energy healing, massage, or yoga.  All of these increase your joy, your self love, and your peace.

Biofield tuning, in particular, reharmonizes your mind and body by disentangling discordant sound from trauma and stress in your energy field and restores vitality and calm to your body and mind. It’s also helps ADHD, chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, depression, teen defiance, and a number of other ailments and problems. It’s wonderful for children and teens, too! You can read more about it on www.biofieldtuning.com.  If you’re interested in making an appointment for tuning, please call or text Ali at 626-616-0945 for a session in Paso Robles or a distance session over the phone.

BEST HERBAL ICED TEA

To make the best herbal iced tea, use the following herbs on their own or combine them for unique flavors. You can use either fresh or dried herb unless noted.

Hibiscus is sour, delicious and makes a beautifully red tea from the dried calyx. It is one of the best herbs to help cool you off on a hot summer day. It’s also known to support heart health and contains a high amount of vitamin C as well as antioxidants. Hibiscus may also lower blood sugar levels.

Lemon balm has a light lemony flavor. The fresh herb tastes far better than when dried. It is considered a heart tonic for cardiovascular system health. Most notably, lemon balm is useful for general exhaustion, stress, anxiety, grief and mild depression. Those with hypothyroidism should avoid lemon balm.

Lemon verbena has a lemon flavor with a hint of mint. Lemon verbena is best known for use to ease tension, reduce anxiety and calm nerves. Lemon verbena is excellent for many common digestive issues and can help reduce joint pain.

Green tea is one of the most common and familiar tea flavors. The dried leaf has been widely researched as an excellent medicinal. It provides anticancer, antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea is also known to assist heart health.

Peppermint is one of the more spicy mints. It makes a wonderful gentle pick-me-up. Peppermint is a digestive herb, helpful where there is gas, colic, and indigestion. It’s one of the best remedies for relief of nausea.

Spearmint is refreshing, uplifting and more mild than peppermint. It has similar medicinal properties as peppermint and is a great choice for children.

Rose petals are soothing, light and floral. Tea from rose petals is a tonifying beverage to help support the whole system. They are particularly helpful in heart formulas. Roses are gently relaxing in action and aroma.

Elder flower is sweet and floral. While elder flower is most noted for colds and flu, especially to help sweat out a fever, this is usually when taken as a hot tea. However, as a cold tea, it is a useful diuretic that helps to expel excess water from the body.

DIRECTIONS:
If using a mixture of herbs, combine them together in equal parts. If using dried herbs, you can mix up a large batch of the herbs for storage so it will be ready to use at any time. For every cup of tea, add a heaping teaspoon of dried herb, or heaping tablespoon of fresh herb.

  • Heat water in a pan until it just starts to boil and remove from heat
  • Add the herb and cover the pan
  • Let steep for 10 minutes
  • Strain
  • Let cool and serve over ice

To our Members and Guests –

I wanted to thank you for your continued support as a member of The Spa Central Coast.  We’ve been in business nearly 18 years because of you.  Small businesses in our community and across America provide approximately 75% of the jobs in our country and create trillions of dollars for our economy.  This is why small businesses have always been referred to as the “backbone” of America.  As all of us go through this difficult time, your support and loyalty are so appreciated.

Our Protocol Going Forward

To our wonderful members and guests,

I want to assure our guests and Members that The Spa Central Coast takes the health and safety of both you and our employees very seriously, and so I’m writing to you to share some of our current standard health and safety practices at The Spa, as well share some new protocols we’ll be implementing due to COVID-19 that will assist us in getting back to work and helping increase your immunity through massage and other health treatments.

As you all know, the COVID-19 virus has surrounded us with growing public health risks, and we have carefully adjusted and increased our already stringent protocols and are closely monitoring the situation with the County’s assistance.  In the past, as well as currently, The Spa Central Coast has always followed, and is committed to, California State Board sanitation protocols for disinfecting and disease prevention.  With guidance from local officials and Center for Disease Controls, we have intensified our efforts around the best practices for virus prevention.  It starts with each and every one of us taking responsibility to care for ourselves and staying home when we are not feeling well.

Here’s what we’re doing to assure this:

BEFORE ENTERING THE SPA

Staff’s temperatures will be taken upon arrival at The Spa’s front door before they are allowed to enter the building to start their shift. Their temperatures will be taken via a No Contact IR Digital Forehead Thermometer, and their temperatures will be documented.  If any employee has an elevated temperature of more than 99.9 degrees, cough or any signs of illness, that employee will be sent home for the 14 day incubation period.  We will also be taking clients’ temperatures via a No Contact IR Digital Forehead Thermometer at the front door before they are able to enter The Spa and clients will be verbally screened for any illnesses and asked if they have taken a shower in the last 12 hours.  Any client with an elevated temperature of more than 99.9 or any sign of illness will be asked to reschedule their appointment and a service charge will be due.  Any client without a temperature or signs of illness will be able to come in for their appointment.  Clients will immediately remove their shoes and put on Spa sandals and will be asked to wash their hands and wipe down their cell phones with rubbing alcohol.  However, we will be asking clients not to use their cell phones in The Spa.  Our in-take forms have been adjusted, and even returning guests such as members, will be required now to answer questions each month in case there are any changes in a client’s health.

OUR TREATMENT ROOMS, SUPPLIES, EQUIPMENT & INSTRUMENTS

Our treatment rooms, supplies used, equipment and instruments have always been disinfected/sterilized between clients. We will continue to follow that protocol from the California State Board. We will now clean each treatment room floors after each appointment. We have always disinfected shared surfaces throughout The Spa such as doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, light switches and counter tops through out the day and will continue to do so.  This has always been a normal procedure you may not have known about.

While you are in your foot soak, we will now spray clients’ hands with an essential oil that has healing benefits and kills germs and bacteria without any harmful effects, and clients’s hands will be wrapped in a warm towel while they’re in their foot soak.  Our staff will continue to sanitize their hands just before and after each service with each client.  For the time being, masks and gloves will be worn during the services upon a client’s request.  We also have several air filters in The Spa to help keep the air clean.

Our appointments will be spaced so that no more than 7 people can be in the reception area and meditation room at one time, most likely it will be less.  We look forward to helping you get back in your committed self-care and wellness routines and will look forward to seeing you soon at The Spa Central Coast.

Much love,
Kitty

Kitty’s Corner: Thoughts, Opinions, & Musings of Kitty’s

Kitty and Maggie Love

Losing a loved one—whether a human or an animal—will rip your heart right out. It’s like you have to put your body back together. I recently lost my beloved, Maggie Love—my 10-year old St Bernard.  I haven’t hurt like this since I lost my grandmother.

I remember when my grandmother passed away, I got a massage and it helped me cope with some of my pain. I have watched and worked on many that come into the Spa who have recently lost someone, and have seen the comfort they feel after receiving massage. But I also began to wonder if some guests may not tell us of their loss before the treatment begins, so I have decided to now offer on our menu a Bereavement Massage for those grieving a loss.

The truth is that pain is held in our bodies and helping that grief to move through and out of the body is so important in order to prevent injury or illness.  The type of massage we give is very different depending on what is going on with you and it’s important to communicate what you’re going through or pain you feel prior to your massage.  Our team of massage therapists are trained to listen to you and give an experience that will help heal not only your body but in a case of loss, your spirit, too.

There have been studies found that receiving a massage after the loss of a loved one helped them cope.  In one study I found, eighteen people ages 34-78 who had lost a relative to cancer took part in the study. They all said the massage provided consolation, helping them balance the need to grieve and the need to adapt to life after loss.

So, if you are, or if you know of someone that has lost a loved one, I encourage you to buy a gift card or book a Bereavement Massage appointment for that individual. It’s one of the most loving things you could do for her or him.

Much love,
Kitty (Owner)

BODY MECHANICS TIP OF THE MONTH
Shoulder Mobility

Body Mechanics

The shoulder is a complex and very unique joint. It is literally a floating system of muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves that must all be firing and functioning near perfection to stay super flexible, stable, strong, and pain-free. Understanding the impact good mobility can have on our daily lives is what I would like to drive home. What is shoulder mobility? It is the ability to move the shoulders through a range of motion with control before being restricted. This includes having requisite strength, coordination, and flexibility. On a day to day basis I see protraction (rounded/forward shoulders); this is actually fairly common and can be caused by many things; poor posture is at the top of that list. Poor posture leads to decreased shoulder mobility = unnatural spine position = increased stress on joints and also causes muscle weakness and overworked muscle groups.

My role is to work through tissue and muscle restriction in order to regain mobility that has been lost, and also to educate you while giving you the tools necessary to continue working to regain mobility and reinforce healthy and natural movement.

When you commit to maintenance i.e. regular massage sessions, you’re doing yourself a huge favor! So keep up the good work in that respect. Now I would like to take it a step further and challenge you to commit to some or all of these stretches in between sessions.

We are truly a masterpiece and our joints do incredible things for us, so we should return the favor.  After all joints = Movement.

Effective ways to improve shoulder mobility and unlock restrictions in movement is PVC pipe stretching; I have been using these stretches and truly believe in the results they bring. Here are a few videos to walk you through them. I recommend 2-3 times a week, 10 reps each.

PVC Pass-Through

Around the World Stretch

Another exercise is a simple doorway stretch: Place your arm against a door jamb in the high-five position (that is, forming an L), your elbow bent 90 degrees. Step through the doorway until you feel the stretch in your chest and the front of your shoulders. Hold for 30 seconds. That’s 1 set; do a total of 4 daily.

Louise Hay, author of “Heal your body” states that the point of power is always in the present moment. This is where we begin to make changes. What a liberating idea! We can begin to let the old nonsense go. Right now. The smallest beginning will make a difference.

We have a team of knowledgeable therapists. If you have any further questions, or if you need a demo on any of these stretches, just ask!

In good health,
Stephanie

Beet Orange Ginger Detox

Beet-Orange-Ginger Detox Beverage

Yields 2 servings

This blend whips beets, oranges and ginger into a detox delight. Depending on the character of your oranges, add stevia to taste. But, be warned: Beets move the bowels, especially if you add the aloe, prune and apple cider vinegar boosters.

SERVES 2

1⁄2 cup (120ml) filtered water
1⁄8 teaspoon finely grated orange zest, plus more to taste
4 medium oranges, peeled and quartered
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, plus more to taste
1 cup (150g) peeled and cubed raw beets (grated for conventional blenders)
2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger, plus more to taste
Pinch of natural salt
Alcohol-free liquid stevia (optional)
1 cup (125g) ice cubes, plus more to taste optional boosters
2 tablespoons pure aloe vera juice
1 pitted prune, chopped
1⁄4 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Throw everything except the ice, but including the boosters, into your blender and blast on high for 30 to 60 seconds, until pulverized. Add the ice and stevia to taste and blast again for 10 to 20 seconds, until chilled. Drink immediately for the most balanced flavor. Strain through a filtration bag, nut milk bag, sheer piece of clean nylon hosiery or fine-mesh strainer for a smoother consistency.

Kitty’s Corner: Thoughts, Opinions, & Musings of Kitty’s

Have you noticed love and romance seem to be in the air?

Could it be because Valentine’s Day is in the middle of February thus it is meant to celebrate the entire month of February as the month of LOVE?

What’s even better is that not only is February the month of LOVE but this February is also a Leap Year. This means we get one extra day for LOVE this month!

We all know love can be a complicated subject so we thought this might be the perfect time to learn a little bit more about this thing called love.

Did you know that the ancient Greeks used eight words to define the different states of love:

1) Storge:  Natural affection

2) Philia: Friendship

3) Eros: Sexual and erotic

4) Agape: Unconditional divine love

5) Lutus:  Flirting

6) Pragma: Committed married love

7) Philautia:  Self love

8) Mania: Obsessive love

The ancient Greeks were pretty smart to recognize all the different ways we love.  But even then, they realized that Self-love was crucial.  The name they gave it was Philautia.  Without Self love, we really can’t express the other types of love naturally.  The bottom line is to love ourselves in a healthy way is healing for us.  It makes our life easier to handle. It allows us to love others also in a more healthy way.

So in this month of love, let each of us ask ourselves “How much do we really love our self?”

Be honest.  How much harder are you on yourself than others?  Do you always take care of everyone else first, and if there is any energy left you come last?  If you don’t do everything in that order do you then feel guilty? Do you find yourself angry or out of sorts for no reason?  Or what about shame?  Is that shame just hiding inside, you don’t know why you feel shame but you just do if you look in the corners of your mind?

Research proves that over time loving and forgiving yourself improves everything in your life. Getting rid of those FALSE beliefs helps to eventually heal you.  How do you do it?  It takes work, it takes time, and sometimes it isn’t easy.

In my research for this I came across a woman named Polly Noble.  She was diagnosed with cancer two times before she was 28 years old.  She survived her cancer and went on to share some of her lessons on life. You can look her up on the Internet and see what she believes helped her in that journey.  Briefly, she said she must be in the moment and give herself ‘space’.  She also suggested that each of us make our own well being a priority.  Sounds like philautia to me!

She recommended giving yourself gifts that you may have given to someone else.  She called it a ‘Duvet’ day.  For example, book a full day at the Spa.  Or a facial…or a massage where it is quiet and you don’t have to think or talk or act. Be good to You.  You are worth every penny.  Every moment.  Just because it is February, the love month, try it.  You may want to do that on a regular basis!

Much love,
Kitty (Owner)

Shamanic Energy Clearing and Soul Retrievals

For a limited time, Shamanic Practitioner Denise Braun will be supporting clients in shamanic energy clearing and soul retrievals. These practices are in alignment with the Q’ero lineage of Shaman (the Peruvian Inca Shaman). Denise’s rites of shamanic healing have been initiated through this lineage to support the energy healing of her clients. If you have struggled with illness, fatigue, depression, anxiety or toxicity, consider a shamanic clearing session to regenerate and open blocked chakras. If you have struggled with your life’s purpose, or lack ambition or motivation, or have struggled in your relationships, a soul retrieval session will help to restore your lost soul and revitalize your energy.

Both sessions require anywhere from 1-2 hours, so flexibility in your schedule is crucial. Every energy clearing and soul retrieval session is unique. Please note: this medicine is powerful. When booking these sessions, please be sure to read through the preparation expectations (available as a handout at the Spa Central Coast). The effects of this energy work lasts far beyond your initial session. You can anticipate ‘light bulb’ moments, some changes in your emotional state, and a need for more sleep post-shamanic session.

Body Mechanics Tip of the Month: Why am I sore after a massage?

This is a common question I can guarantee every therapist has heard before! Well, I’m here to explain a few things and provide some very important tips on how to minimize soreness.

Massage is a powerful tool to our everyday life; besides making us feel great, it is a stress reducer, a preventative for injury and sickness and it has the power to increase our strength and productivity.  I could go on all day about the endless benefits of receiving regular bodywork!

In a sense, receiving a massage can almost feel like you have had a great workout – endorphins, blood flow, a clearer mind, and great sleep are just a few of the post massage/workout benefits!

But chances are there will be times when you wake up the next morning feeling sore (this is normal!).

So what is a good way to minimize that soreness?

Glad you asked!

1. Maintenance! Get on a regular schedule for your bodywork. Stay ahead of the game!

One thing you have probably heard me say is, “the pain comes last.” Don’t wait for the pain to find you, because 9 times out of 10, the problem was there far before the pain kicked in so make the commitment to preventative sessions.

The more commitment you put into keeping your muscles smooth and “knot free” the less achy and sore you will be post massage.

2. Hydration! Be purposeful with your hydration pre and post bodywork. The average body requires half of your body weight in ounces of H2O daily. So use that as a guide when gauging how much H2O you should drink.

3. Another great tool in addition to massage and optimum wellness is adding on a far infrared session prior to your massage session. Benefits include:

  • Elimination of heavy metals – far infrared sauna penetrates the body on a cellular level to eliminate heavy metals, toxins, and lactic acid
  • Preparation of your muscle and tissue for a deeper level massage
  • Promotion of muscle recovery.

Post massage recommendations:

An Epson salt soak is always a wonderful idea (preferably pharmaceutical grade)

Magnesium has a powerful effect on the body so utilize those benefits.

DO NOT complete a heavy workout post massage!  Allow your body to rebalance naturally using the tools and tips provided.

Here are a few recommended post massage success products we have right here at The Spa Central Coast.

1. Poseidon muscle rub (Arnica based anti-inflammatory)

2. CBD topical rub

3. “I am soothed of aches and pains” essential oil can be added into your bath or applied directly

4. White egret pharmaceutical grade Epson salt and magnesium oil (Lavender or Eucalyptus)

Feel free to ask your therapist for recommendations and also check with the front desk if you need more info on any of these products!

In good health,

Stephanie
