Ali’s Health Corner: Topics that affect our Health & Wellness
The 4th of July always reminds me of family. We often spend it celebrating it with our immediate families, but it is also a time when we think about our larger family—the communities we’re part of and our entire American family as we contemplate our freedom and who are as a nation.
I learned the hard way how much power all these families have on us. I grew up in a small town in a community I loved and attended a conservative religion where I actively participated. In my childhood, I always felt different from my peers. I overcompensated for the feeling of difference within me that I couldn’t accept by becoming a people pleaser. When I came out at 29, most of my friends, my family, and my church community rejected me. I didn’t know anyone else at the time who was gay.
To feel that much rejection at once was the most painful, loneliest moment of my life. Its immediacy was as though I was pushed from a powerful force behind me into water only to later realize it was deeper than I could manage. I saw faces staring down at me as I sank deeper. Despite reaching my hands for them, those who could have easily saved me just stood still, staring while I struggled for my life. Everything I thought I could trust in, all that I had built, all that I thought I knew existed no more. It had disintegrated in a matter of days. I sunk to the bottom of my life’s ocean for two years and stayed there in pain and anger—to such an intense degree I had never before felt.
But somehow in that brokenness, despite being told by others that God didn’t love me and that I no longer had any worth, I desperately clung to the feeling of love and joy I had felt during my years of developing a relationship with a power greater than myself. I learned what it is to really forgive and how important it is to our own mental, physical, and emotional health. However, it took 6 years before most of my family accepted me into their circle again.
Though I’d not wish this experience on anyone else, I made the choice to open my heart and learn what I could from this experience instead of closing it or giving up. Doing so, taught me to wholeheartedly trust in a higher power, to ultimately figure out how to love myself and in doing so, to sincerely love my neighbor because I could finally genuinely love who I am.
When I heard in the news last week that an 8-year old African American boy hung himself after being bullied, I felt very impelled to share this message. It is the lack of compassion toward each other that will be the only thing that has the power to destroy us as a nation. Forgiveness and compassion aren’t just empty words, they are crucial for everyone’s health and wellness.
We need to come together as part of this great American family. We all need each other, and we need the diversity that exists whether it’s political, ethnic, cultural, religious, or sexual orientation. Difference makes us stronger not weaker—so many credible studies show it.
Why not use July 4th to start something new since our current way isn’t working? Let’s try to listen to each other, respect each other, agree to disagree where we can’t find true common ground, and begin to create our circles of inclusion around, and focus on, healthy ways of building together what is important to us all: our freedom, the safety of our kids & family, and an opportunity to earn a decent living for our time and skills we offer.
If you’re interested in attending a class on Forgiveness and Self Love this month, I’ll be co-teaching it with the newest member of our team, Janice Patterson who overcame a severe health crisis despite the prognosis given her. See more information under “” below on how to sign up. Also new this month is our new family menu. You can come to The Spa with your entire family. Your children and teens can now enjoy our healing spa treatments.
At The Spa Central Coast, all are welcome regardless.

Kitty’s Corner — What Your Skin Might Be Telling You
I’ve been seeing a lot of clients lately whose skin is suffering. If you’ve come to me before, you’ve heard me speak about diet (i.e., what you’re eating). You may not realize it but your diet severely affects your skin. Most skin conditions are due to inflammation. This is one of the reasons I’ve brought Ali, our Master Certified Health and Wellness coach into The Spa. If you notice rough patches of skin, frizzy hair or nails that are brittle, you’re likely deficient in Omega-3 fats. We need these healthy dietary fats to thrive, and fat itself is so important in skin health. We have a layer on our skin that takes in dietary fats into its membranes. Water and gut health matter, too, for skin health. We also have bacteria on the skin that need to be fed on the surface, too. Ali, can help you with improving your diet. I can help you with the surface part. Together we can help you tackle your eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and other forms of dermatitis.
In fact, to treat the surface, I’ve just brought on a simple 3-step program for those who have challenging skin problems like acne. I don’t ever put anything on my shelves unless I’ve personally used it. I’ve used it every day for the past month and have noticed huge benefits. I’m happy to say it is now available to you. You can purchase it online from us through the MindBody app or come in to The Spa. I’ll be happy to explain how to use it to anyone who buys this regimen. Consultations are always free.

Health & Wellness Classes
I will be co-teaching a class on “Forgiveness and Self Love” with Janice Patterson, a new member of our team who had a health crisis that she overcame despite the prognosis. This class will be on Tuesday, 31 at 6:00pm in the Meditation room at The Spa Central Coast. This class will help you have a better understanding of why self-love and forgiveness is the highest level of love and how everything in your life that is or isn’t working is connected to it and how forgiveness is crucial to our mental, physical and emotion health. You’ll learn how to forgive yourself and those who have hurt you.
We’ll also be identifying how to listen to what your heart is trying to tell you and creating vision boards to help you identify what your soul needs, as well as desires that you may not be aware of but that are meant to be part of your life.
This class will allow deep healing and provide you the opportunity to move on to your highest potential. This class will be donations only because we believe this class is so needed by so many people.
New Hours (just a gentle reminder)
As you know…we are making health and wellness a larger part of The Spa Central Coast, and part of being healthy is getting rest and relaxation. Starting March 2018, we will be closing on Sundays (except for parties of 4 or more and holidays) in order to give our team a day of rest and time to spend with their families. Thank you for your continued loyalty. We hope that you will support us on this new path and book your appointments Monday-Saturday from 9:00am-6:00pm.Click Here to Register for Forgiveness & Self Love Class

What Sets Us Apart from Other Day Spas
(Each month we share one thing that makes us different from the rest)
We are one of the few day spas to offer a children’s menu because we realize the benefit of massage on kids. Studies show it helps reduce ADHD**, increases cooperation, improves academic performance and reduces violence* in children and teens.
