Kitty’s Corner: Thoughts, Opinions, & Musings of Kitty’s

Have you noticed love and romance seem to be in the air?

Could it be because Valentine’s Day is in the middle of February thus it is meant to celebrate the entire month of February as the month of LOVE?

What’s even better is that not only is February the month of LOVE but this February is also a Leap Year. This means we get one extra day for LOVE this month!

We all know love can be a complicated subject so we thought this might be the perfect time to learn a little bit more about this thing called love.

Did you know that the ancient Greeks used eight words to define the different states of love:

1) Storge:  Natural affection

2) Philia: Friendship

3) Eros: Sexual and erotic

4) Agape: Unconditional divine love

5) Lutus:  Flirting

6) Pragma: Committed married love

7) Philautia:  Self love

8) Mania: Obsessive love

The ancient Greeks were pretty smart to recognize all the different ways we love.  But even then, they realized that Self-love was crucial.  The name they gave it was Philautia.  Without Self love, we really can’t express the other types of love naturally.  The bottom line is to love ourselves in a healthy way is healing for us.  It makes our life easier to handle. It allows us to love others also in a more healthy way.

So in this month of love, let each of us ask ourselves “How much do we really love our self?”

Be honest.  How much harder are you on yourself than others?  Do you always take care of everyone else first, and if there is any energy left you come last?  If you don’t do everything in that order do you then feel guilty? Do you find yourself angry or out of sorts for no reason?  Or what about shame?  Is that shame just hiding inside, you don’t know why you feel shame but you just do if you look in the corners of your mind?

Research proves that over time loving and forgiving yourself improves everything in your life. Getting rid of those FALSE beliefs helps to eventually heal you.  How do you do it?  It takes work, it takes time, and sometimes it isn’t easy.

In my research for this I came across a woman named Polly Noble.  She was diagnosed with cancer two times before she was 28 years old.  She survived her cancer and went on to share some of her lessons on life. You can look her up on the Internet and see what she believes helped her in that journey.  Briefly, she said she must be in the moment and give herself ‘space’.  She also suggested that each of us make our own well being a priority.  Sounds like philautia to me!

She recommended giving yourself gifts that you may have given to someone else.  She called it a ‘Duvet’ day.  For example, book a full day at the Spa.  Or a facial…or a massage where it is quiet and you don’t have to think or talk or act. Be good to You.  You are worth every penny.  Every moment.  Just because it is February, the love month, try it.  You may want to do that on a regular basis!

Much love,
Kitty (Owner)

What’s New Now Offering:

Shamanic Energy Clearing and Soul Retrievals

For a limited time, Shamanic Practitioner Denise Braun will be supporting clients in shamanic energy clearing and soul retrievals. These practices are in alignment with the Q’ero lineage of Shaman (the Peruvian Inca Shaman). Denise’s rites of shamanic healing have been initiated through this lineage to support the energy healing of her clients. If you have struggled with illness, fatigue, depression, anxiety or toxicity, consider a shamanic clearing session to regenerate and open blocked chakras. If you have struggled with your life’s purpose, or lack ambition or motivation, or have struggled in your relationships, a soul retrieval session will help to restore your lost soul and revitalize your energy.

Both sessions require anywhere from 1-2 hours, so flexibility in your schedule is crucial. Every energy clearing and soul retrieval session is unique. Please note: this medicine is powerful. When booking these sessions, please be sure to read through the preparation expectations (available as a handout at the Spa Central Coast). The effects of this energy work lasts far beyond your initial session. You can anticipate ‘light bulb’ moments, some changes in your emotional state, and a need for more sleep post-shamanic session.

Shamanic Energy Clearing: $375/session

Shamanic Soul Retrieval: $450/session

Unsure which session to book? Speak with Kitty at the Spa CC to be sure.

Tarot Readings

For a limited time, Denise Braun (Author, Intuitive, and Shamanic Practitioner) will be offering Tarot readings at the Spa CC. Are you looking for guidance with a big life change? Relationship advice? Are you blocked, stuck or uninspired? Tarot is a tool of divination that has been practiced since the 15th century. Denise uses intuition and energy to read your cards and support you with expert guidance, and has been reading Tarot for over 25 years.

Body Mechanics Tip of the Month: Why am I sore after a massage?

This is a common question I can guarantee every therapist has heard before! Well, I’m here to explain a few things and provide some very important tips on how to minimize soreness.

Massage is a powerful tool to our everyday life; besides making us feel great, it is a stress reducer, a preventative for injury and sickness and it has the power to increase our strength and productivity.  I could go on all day about the endless benefits of receiving regular bodywork!

In a sense, receiving a massage can almost feel like you have had a great workout – endorphins, blood flow, a clearer mind, and great sleep are just a few of the post massage/workout benefits!

But chances are there will be times when you wake up the next morning feeling sore (this is normal!).

So what is a good way to minimize that soreness?

Glad you asked!

1. Maintenance! Get on a regular schedule for your bodywork. Stay ahead of the game!

One thing you have probably heard me say is, “the pain comes last.” Don’t wait for the pain to find you, because 9 times out of 10, the problem was there far before the pain kicked in so make the commitment to preventative sessions.

The more commitment you put into keeping your muscles smooth and “knot free” the less achy and sore you will be post massage.

2. Hydration! Be purposeful with your hydration pre and post bodywork. The average body requires half of your body weight in ounces of H2O daily. So use that as a guide when gauging how much H2O you should drink.

3. Another great tool in addition to massage and optimum wellness is adding on a far infrared session prior to your massage session. Benefits include:

  • Elimination of heavy metals – far infrared sauna penetrates the body on a cellular level to eliminate heavy metals, toxins, and lactic acid
  • Preparation of your muscle and tissue for a deeper level massage
  • Promotion of muscle recovery.

Post massage recommendations:

An Epson salt soak is always a wonderful idea (preferably pharmaceutical grade)

Magnesium has a powerful effect on the body so utilize those benefits.

DO NOT complete a heavy workout post massage!  Allow your body to rebalance naturally using the tools and tips provided.

Here are a few recommended post massage success products we have right here at The Spa Central Coast.

1. Poseidon muscle rub (Arnica based anti-inflammatory)

2. CBD topical rub

3. “I am soothed of aches and pains” essential oil can be added into your bath or applied directly

4. White egret pharmaceutical grade Epson salt and magnesium oil (Lavender or Eucalyptus)

Feel free to ask your therapist for recommendations and also check with the front desk if you need more info on any of these products!

In good health,

Stephanie

Ali’s Health Corner:  Topics that Affect Our Health & Wellness

A lot has been coming up in the news about depression and about suicide.  Though these are not topics people like to talk about, it’s important to acknowledge that it’s not uncommon for all of us to experience situational depression at some point during our lives—meaning that an event, like a divorce or death, triggers those deeply sad emotions.  Those with clinical depression face a more challenging obstacle because it’s not necessarily a situation that initiates or is responsible for their depression, and it can be very difficult to overcome.

This year in general has been a difficult year for many people.  Additionally, there is a lot in the world and in our society that is challenging.  Negative events strain our mind, body, and spirit, and sometimes it just feels like too much.  If that’s where you are, you’re not alone.  I have been there myself, and I want to share what I’ve learned in case it may help you or a loved one.

Anchor yourself that you may not be overcome by life’s storms.

Believe in something bigger than yourself.  Dr William Sears explains that “Science says spiritual people of all sorts are more likely to have happier brains, healthier bodies, and longer lifespans.*

I’m embarrassed to admit that I used to be a bit judgmental in my youth.  I grew up in a religion that trained me that ultimately everyone needed to believe what my religion taught, and then my own personal life storms came and taught me differently.  Those experiences showed me that spiritual truth is anything that helps a person become a better person—more kind, more loving, more charitable, more teachable, more authentic.  It doesn’t matter what religion good spiritual nuggets come from or whether they come from a religion at all as long as they help an individual become a better person.  So if something moves you to your highest self, embrace it!

You were meant to be.  Don’t give up!

There was a time in my life I almost gave up.  I’m glad I didn’t.  There have been utterly beautiful moments and miracles since then.  Trials and painful situations end.  They do.  Keep holding on.

Keep moving forward even if you don’t feel like it.

You may not know how things are going to work out when things aren’t going well, but they will if you keep moving forward.  Remember that “When you come to the edge of all the light you have known and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen:  either you’ll be given something to stand on or you will be taught how to fly.” (Unknown).

Fill your mind for the first 30 minutes each morning with positive things.

This creates that positive set point for the rest of your day.  You’ll feel better,  have more patience, and experience deeper inner peace.  Listen to inspirational videos or talks online.  Here’s an example of a 15 minute one:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He218LVmvw8

Don’t forget to laugh, especially at yourself.

Laughter is medicine for the body.  It releases endorphins, forms bonds, and increases brain connectivity. **  Watch funny movies or find a humorous friend to hang out with.

Keep flow in the body.

Flow is health.  Blockage is disease.  Massage is a powerful way to maintain this flow.  Massage is even known to significantly decrease stress and depression according to the Mayo Clinic.  Stress accounts for many illnesses.  “A 60-minute massage lowers cortisol—the stress hormone by an average of 30 percent…and increases serotonin [the happy hormone] by 28 percent.”  This combination boosts the body’s “ability to fight off pain, anxiety and feelings of sadness.”***  Check out the monthly massage special below if you, a family member, or friend could use some de-stressing.

Kitty’s Corner: CBD Topical Lotions & Massage

For the past couple of months, I’ve been wanting to add something additional to our massages at The Spa Central Coast to deliver even a more relaxing massage to ease stress and relieve pain.  I think I’ve found it.  A few weeks ago, we started carrying Sanare Smart CBD topical lotions.  We also have Vybes CBD Blueberry Mint and Peach Ginger drinks (that only have 4 g of sugar in a 14 oz bottle).  We will soon have CBD oil for dogs, too.

CBD is extracted from cannabis but is very different from marijuana because it does not lead to altered perception and cognition. Rather it tends to calm the nervous system.  In fact this June, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first pharmaceutical grade CBD, called Epidiolex, to treat severe seizure disorders in children.****

I’ve enjoyed my massages with this product and think you will as well.  We have a CBD Massage special this month if you want to try it (see the book button below), or you can also purchase your own lotion to take home (see purchase button below).

I’ll be happy to explain how to use it to anyone who buys this product.  Consultations are always free.

Much Love,
Kitty (Owner)

Ali Bowen, MCHC will once again be co-teaching our class “Forgiveness and Self Love.” We’re breaking this class into 2 parts.  The first part will be on Tuesday, September 25 at 6:00pm in the Meditation room at The Spa Central Coast.  This class will help you have a better understanding of why self-love and forgiveness is the highest level of love and how everything in your life that is or isn’t working is connected to it and how forgiveness is crucial to our mental, physical and emotion health.  You’ll learn how to forgive yourself and those who have hurt you.

The second part will be on Tuesday, October 1 at 6:00pm.  We’ll be identifying how to listen to what your heart is trying to tell you and creating vision boards to help you identify what your soul needs, as well as desires that you may not be aware of but that are meant to be part of your life.

This class is $25 per person and includes both classes.  Once you sign up for the class on September 25th, we’ll sign you up automatically for the vision board class on Oct 1.

Ali’s Health Corner:  Topics that affect our Health & Wellness

The 4th of July always reminds me of family.  We often spend it celebrating it with our immediate families, but it is also a time when we think about our larger family—the communities we’re part of and our entire American family as we contemplate our freedom and who are as a nation.

I learned the hard way how much power all these families have on us.  I grew up in a small town in a community I loved and attended a conservative religion where I actively participated.  In my childhood, I always felt different from my peers.  I overcompensated for the feeling of difference within me that I couldn’t accept by becoming a people pleaser.  When I came out at 29, most of my friends, my family, and my church community rejected me.  I didn’t know anyone else at the time who was gay.

To feel that much rejection at once was the most painful, loneliest moment of my life.  Its immediacy was as though I was pushed from a powerful force behind me into water only to later realize it was deeper than I could manage.  I saw faces staring down at me as I sank deeper.  Despite reaching my hands for them, those who could have easily saved me just stood still, staring while I struggled for my life.  Everything I thought I could trust in, all that I had built, all that I thought I knew existed no more.  It had disintegrated in a matter of days.  I sunk to the bottom of my life’s ocean for two years and stayed there in pain and anger—to such an intense degree I had never before felt.

But somehow in that brokenness, despite being told by others that God didn’t love me and that I no longer had any worth, I desperately clung to the feeling of love and joy I had felt during my years of developing a relationship with a power greater than myself.  I learned what it is to really forgive and how important it is to our own mental, physical, and emotional health.  However, it took 6 years before most of my family accepted me into their circle again.

Though I’d not wish this experience on anyone else, I made the choice to open my heart and learn what I could from this experience instead of closing it or giving up.  Doing so, taught me to wholeheartedly trust in a higher power, to ultimately figure out how to love myself and in doing so, to sincerely love my neighbor because I could finally genuinely love who I am.

When I heard in the news last week that an 8-year old African American boy hung himself after being bullied, I felt very impelled to share this message.  It is the lack of compassion toward each other that will be the only thing that has the power to destroy us as a nation.  Forgiveness and compassion aren’t just empty words, they are crucial for everyone’s health and wellness.

We need to come together as part of this great American family.  We all need each other, and we need the diversity that exists whether it’s political, ethnic, cultural, religious, or sexual orientation.  Difference makes us stronger not weaker—so many credible studies show it.

Why not use July 4th to start something new since our current way isn’t working?  Let’s try to listen to each other, respect each other, agree to disagree where we can’t find true common ground, and begin to create our circles of inclusion around, and focus on, healthy ways of building together what is important to us all:  our freedom, the safety of our kids & family, and an opportunity to earn a decent living for our time and skills we offer.

If you’re interested in attending a class on Forgiveness and Self Love this month, I’ll be co-teaching it with the newest member of our team, Janice Patterson who overcame a severe health crisis despite the prognosis given her.  See more information under “” below on how to sign up.  Also new this month is our new family menu.  You can come to The Spa with your entire family.  Your children and teens can now enjoy our healing spa treatments.

At The Spa Central Coast, all are welcome regardless.

Kitty’s Corner — What Your Skin Might Be Telling You

I’ve been seeing a lot of clients lately whose skin is suffering.  If you’ve come to me before, you’ve heard me speak about diet (i.e., what you’re eating).  You may not realize it but your diet severely affects your skin.  Most skin conditions are due to inflammation.  This is one of the reasons I’ve brought Ali, our Master Certified Health and Wellness coach into The Spa.  If you notice rough patches of skin, frizzy hair or nails that are brittle, you’re likely deficient in Omega-3 fats.  We need these healthy dietary fats to thrive, and fat itself is so important in skin health.  We have a layer on our skin that takes in dietary fats into its membranes. Water and gut health matter, too, for skin health.  We also have bacteria on the skin that need to be fed on the surface, too.  Ali, can help you with improving your diet.  I can help you with the surface part.  Together we can help you tackle your eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and other forms of dermatitis.

In fact, to treat the surface, I’ve just brought on a simple 3-step program for those who have challenging skin problems like acne.  I don’t ever put anything on my shelves unless I’ve personally used it.  I’ve used it every day for the past month and have noticed huge benefits.  I’m happy to say it is now available to you.  You can purchase it online from us through the MindBody app or come in to The Spa.  I’ll be happy to explain how to use it to anyone who buys this regimen.  Consultations are always free.

Much love,

Kitty (Owner)

Health & Wellness Classes

I will be co-teaching a class on “Forgiveness and Self Love” with Janice Patterson, a new member of our team who had a health crisis that she overcame despite the prognosis.  This class will be on Tuesday, 31 at 6:00pm in the Meditation room at The Spa Central Coast.  This class will help you have a better understanding of why self-love and forgiveness is the highest level of love and how everything in your life that is or isn’t working is connected to it and how forgiveness is crucial to our mental, physical and emotion health.  You’ll learn how to forgive yourself and those who have hurt you.

We’ll also be identifying how to listen to what your heart is trying to tell you and creating vision boards to help you identify what your soul needs, as well as desires that you may not be aware of but that are meant to be part of your life.

New Hours (just a gentle reminder)

As you know…we are making health and wellness a larger part of The Spa Central Coast, and part of being healthy is getting rest and relaxation.  Starting March 2018, we will be closing on Sundays (except for parties of 4 or more and holidays) in order to give our team a day of rest and time to spend with their families.  Thank you for your continued loyalty.  We hope that you will support us on this new path and book your appointments Monday-Saturday from 9:00am-6:00pm.

What Sets Us Apart from Other Day Spas

(Each month we share one thing that makes us different from the rest)

We are one of the few day spas to offer a children’s menu because we realize the benefit of massage on kids.  Studies show it helps reduce ADHD**, increases cooperation, improves academic performance and reduces violence* in children and teens.
