HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!
A BIG THANKS TO OUR VETERANS!
We have a chance every year during the 4th of July to think about our country, our families, our freedom, our communities. We often spend the 4th celebrating with our immediate families, but it is also a time when we think about our larger family—the communities we’re part of and our entire American family as we contemplate our freedom and who are as a nation.
Ali’s Uncle Roy enlisted in the military during WWII but was rejected due to a hernia. He earned enough money to pay for surgery, had the surgery, and re-enlisted. At 19, he was accepted and ended up being part of the military crew that raised the “first” American flag in Iwo Jima—the one that was destroyed in battle. Shortly after, he was assigned to another part of the island where he was killed with many of his comrades. The flag wasn’t raised again until later– in that famous flag raising picture at Iwo Jima after we defeated Japan. Unfortunately, Ali’s Uncle Roy never saw it raised again.
WWII represented a time when Americans came together with their Allies to defend freedom against dictators, the three Axis leaders: Hitler, Hirohito, and Mussolini.
May we all reflect on the times when we’ve come together as families—both our immediate one and our great American family, as communities, as a nation. We can do so much more together than when we are divided. And it’s in those moments of feeling connected and having common goals when we have the greatest successes and the greatest achievements in our country. Credible studies show that we all need each other, and we need the diversity that exists whether it’s political, ethnic, cultural, religious, or sexual orientation. Difference makes us stronger not weaker. Getting along with others is also good for our health. Discord isn’t. It increases our blood pressure, cortisol levels, and heart rate.
Why not use July 4th to listen to each other, respect each other, agree to disagree where we can’t find true common ground, and begin to create our circles of inclusion around, and focus on, healthy ways of building together what is important to us all: our freedom, the safety of our kids & family, and an opportunity to earn a decent living for our time and skills we offer.
We hope you come visit us soon At The Spa Central Coast where all are welcome.
