Seems like everybody is talking about the ‘new’ year….’new’ decade….’new’ ways….’new’ promises …OR said in a different way…. NEW ENERGY. Seeing perfectly with 20/20 vision. So how do we get ‘new energy’? What have you committed to as far as self care?

One way to get new energy would be to drop or reduce old “bad” habits and spend more time doing “good” habits.

For example, let’s start by asking ourselves if we are exhausted?

Are we just rushing around and around getting things done but not doing our best? How tired do we look when we see ourselves in the mirror? Maybe we’re like a cell phone that’s flashing “low battery” levels. This means it’s time to recharge! It’s time to book! (Book now)

Mindfulness in the New Year

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it’s more readily available to us when we practice on a daily basis.

Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain.

Body Mechanics Tip of the Month: How do you sleep?

This is a common question I ask my clients, and that question is typically followed by a slew of similar questions. I realized a long time ago that I wasn’t going to be able to just do a massage and call it a day. I realized I had a real hunger to tackle the bigger stuff. And the bigger stuff meant breaking down the day to day body mechanics in order to understand what your body is doing.

The ability to connect mind and body is not something that always comes naturally.  It’s a learned art and it requires practice.

What are body mechanics anyway? Body mechanics is a broad-spectrum term we use to describe the way we move as we go about our daily lives.

It includes how we hold our bodies when we sit, stand, lift, carry, bend, and sleep. Poor body mechanics are often the cause of back pain and pain in your body in general.

I could go into this in depth but I think to start I’m going to share a few realistic tips to add into your daily routine.  These practices can take time and commitment but if done right will change the way your mind and body connect and when that happens it will become more natural.

We’ll start with posture.

I use this technique to teach clients how to tilt the pelvis in order to take the stress off the low back, it also helps to teach how to engage your internal obliques, which also takes stress off the back, and (huge bonus!) it teaches us to stand up straight and throw out the slouch habit.

Step 1. Feet fall under your shoulders (shoulder width apart).

Step 2. Take a deep breath in and fill those lungs.

Step 3. Hold that breath and slowly release; you’re going to want to blow all the air out if your lungs in small breaths. I typically count 8 breaths out.

Step 4. Think… belly button touch spine, shoulders back, and pelvis forward. This should take all the stress away from the back.

While doing this technique you should create a proper pelvic tilt and create the much-needed hollow in the low back, bringing the spine to a neutral position.

This should be done 2-3 times a day to strengthen your core and create better posture.

Berry-Blue Protein Shake Recipe

Yields 1 serving

2 scoops vanilla protein powder
1⁄4 cup plain Greek yogurt
1⁄2 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup kale leaves
1 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
1⁄4 avocado

Combine all ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth.
